Powa Ceremony
Saturdays, 14:00–15:00
24 August | 16 November 2024
The Powa ceremony is a profound method taught by Buddha and is achieved through the power of meditation and compassion. If we practice the prayers for the deceased known as "Powa" with faith, compassion and concentration, we can transfer the consciousness of those who have recently passed away to a higher rebirth or to the Pure Land of a Buddha. The Powa ceremony can be performed on behalf of one deceased, several deceased, or countless deceased beings. This practice is for recently deceased people who have not died for more than 49 days. With this practice we accumulate a great deal of merit.
Everyone is warmly welcome to participate in these sung prayers. Just come by! No registration is necessary. After the ceremony, there will be an opportunity for meaningful conversation over coffee/tea and cake.

What to expect
Together, we conduct the prayers for the deceased – the Powa Ceremony – in German on these Saturday afternoons. The prayers are chanted, and anyone who wishes can chant along or simply listen. Mantra recitations are included in this prayer practice. The Powa practice is carried out in a group. An offering, such as food or flowers, for the ceremony can be brought along if desired.
The Powa prayer booklet (Sadhana) are provided for use on site.
Frequently asked questions
Can people attend our courses even if they are not Buddhists?
Yes - Everyone is welcome at Kadampa Meditation Center Switzerland. No one is excluded, no matter what your background or beliefs are. The methods and practices taught here are suitable for everyone, no matter how much experience you have.
Do I have to wear certain clothes to attend the events at the center?
No - Please come as you are. At KMC Switzerland, chairs and meditation cushions are provided for seating. If you like to sit on the cushion, we recommend that you wear comfortable clothing. Traditionally you will be asked to take off your shoes before entering the meditation room. We have floor heating and socks if needed.
Do I need meditation experience to participate?
No - Many people who come to our events have little or no experience. It doesn't matter if you have tried to meditate before without much success. Everyone finds meditation challenging in the beginning because our mind is naturally very busy. Kadampa Meditation Center is a perfect place to train in meditation.
Is the center also accessible by wheelchair?
Yes - Our meditation room is at ground level and we lay out ramps for the few steps we have.
